HORSE Riding

Horseback-riding sports have been organized since ancient times. Today, there are several kinds of horseback-riding events, including show jumping, horse racing, and dressage. In horse racing, the rider who rides the horse is called jockey.

DIFFERENT WAYS OF HORSE RIDING

The rider can handle and ride the horse in many ways with signals called “aids”. These aids are passed on to the horse through body movements of the rider, the reins, by exerting pressures with the calves and heels, and by the voice. The aids help the rider to have the movements of the horse under control.

Usually, horses have three gaits: the trot, the walk, and the gallop. Riders must pass on the correct aids for each of the gait to avoid confusion in the horse.

EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES NEEDED FOR HORSE RIDING

There are different types of saddles that are designed to provide comfort and safety to the rider. Saddles also distribute the rider’s weight on the back of the horse which is comfortable for the it too.

Depending on the use, the characteristics of the saddles vary:

  • Jumping and racing saddle: it has shorter stirrups; it allows the rider to lean forward thereby, helping the horses to build up speed.
  • Training saddle: It has a deep seat with a higher cantle which enhances safety and balance of the rider.
  • Riding saddle: These saddles are comfortable for riding for long distances.

Apart from the saddle, different kinds of reins, headbands, bridles, and halters are used to transmit the signals to the horse.

There is a few equipment available to protect the legs of the animal too, such as bandages to strengthen their joints, tendons, and ligaments.
